Waverly is a gorgeous fawn Boxer girl with a black mask. She is about 3 years old. At 45 lb, she is underweight.
Ms Waverly has quite an interesting tale to tell! Over a week ago, some neighbors in the vicinity of I-44 and Jefferson Ave. began hearing a dog crying in the night. Upon investigation, they found this poor Boxer in the grassy area between the shoulder of the highway and the MODOT fencing. Waverly was very frightened and would not come to anyone, but over the course of the next few days, neighbors would leave food for her and try to coax her to them. They would leave blankets and cardboard boxes for shelter, but the Boxer would still not come to anyone. The neighbors tried to reach out to shelters, but received little help. Finally one local resident placed an ad on Craigslist describing her dilemma and a rescue volunteer saw the ad and responded. With that, rescue volunteers went into action, trying to lure her with food, setting traps and keeping vigil. (See photos below) Finally, after about 6 total days of being outdoors in frigid temperatures, little Waverly surrendered herself to Melinda, a volunteer with Dent County Animal Welfare Society. Melinda took her to Banfield Pet Hospital where volunteers from St. Louis Boxer Rescue met her. This poor little thing looked just exhausted! It's hard to imagine what she went through being cold, hungry, frightened and stressed to the max! The good news is that she is now safe, warm and being well fed. The bad news is that Waverly is heartworm positive. In addition, Waverly may have some injury to her anterior cruciate ligaments (her knee area). Initially, our vet thought that both ACLs had been ruptured but x-rays showed that they were not. However, Waverly is still limping somewhat, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.
Waverly is doing well in her foster home. Right now she is pretty quiet and stays near her foster mom most of the time. She does well with the other dogs in the home and LOVES the children! Waverly seems to be house trained, loves to ride in the car and seems to know some basic commands. She has already been spayed, is now up to date on her vaccines and is being well cared for. Heartworm treatment will begin on 8 February 2010.
